Burton Stone Lane

An adaptation of a Victorian villa in the Clifton Conservation area of York. A new focal point linking the house to the garden for our client and his young family.

A wonderful house, higher ceilings than most, beautifully proportioned rooms, but the kitchen didn’t work and the house had no connection to the garden.

We remodelled some of the interior spaces and created a folded brick extension re-orienting and reconnecting the existing building to the garden. The extension has a number of different openings: a sliding glass corner, a pop-out window and window seat, and a slot window & rooflight each creating new views to the garden, openings to physically connect and bringing natural light deep into the plan.

“well-organised, efficient, professional and highly responsive to a client brief, and a pleasure to work with. But more than this, an ability and willingness to find beautiful and affordable solutions to design challenges, to think round issues inventively and nimbly especially with challenging budgets.”
